Santos Orellana Artist Reception
Monday, March 6, 2017
3pm
FREE

Join us for a special artist reception and meet & greet for Santos Orellena. Get a chance to meet and talk to Orellena about his art and exhibit being displayed in The Loft!

Orellena is a scientist turned artist who produces works of art using vibrant colors and bold outlines. These glyph-like designs are reminiscent of Mesoamerican times which in essence define him. And through this concept Santos is able to relate his story as well as provide social commentary of these times.

Exhibit Description: A series of 18 pieces that were originally made in 2013 to commemorate the date in which the Latino race became the majority of the population in the state of California. This Collection entitled Reflexiones (Reflections) was first shown in its entirety at Santos Fine Art Galleries in June 2013. It now takes on a different context at the University of California San Diego since the Latino race currently deals with a massive series of events under the new political administration in the United States of America.

Akiko Tsuruga Bio ~

AKIKO has been a mainstay on the New York jazz scene since 2001. Being of Japanese origin, this talented musician began playing the Organ at the age of three. She launched her career in jazz immediately after graduating from the Osaka College of Music. While living in Osaka, she had opportunities to play with world-renowned jazz
musicians from the United States. Grady Tate, in particular, had the strongest influence on her professional career and convinced her to move to the U. S, and performed on her
Japanese debut album. Dr. Lonnie Smith is one of Akikos greatest mentors, and she considers him as her biggest influence.

Early in her New York career, she had the great pleasure to play several gigs with Frank Wess and Jimmy Cobb. While she has made a great reputation performing with her own band, she has also enhanced her name on the jazz scene playing with Lou Donaldson at Carnegie Hall, as well as jazz festivals and jazz clubs all over the world, including tours in Japan. Going to Europe with Lou Donaldson has become an annual event for her since 2012.

Stephanie Richards + Phantom Station: Conduction for Butch Morris, Part II
Monday, February 27, 2017
Doors 7:30pm / Show 8pm
FREE

This three-part series excavates spontaneous sonic combustion and delves into the unknown through Conduction, an artistic process created by Butch Morris to enable "an improvised duet for ensemble and conductor" without words or musical notation. Through a process of ideographic physical signs and gestures, Prof. Stephanie Richards conducts the ensemble Phantom Station to create a communion of multiple intelligences and a bravely vulnerable creative journey into the unknown.

Phantom Station is a collective of artists and graduate students of the UCSD Department of Music, performing January 30, February 27 and March 13.
Each concert will feature a special guest.

Bio: (use if needed)
Stephanie Richards
Exploring spaces between jazz and experimental music, trumpeter and composer Stephanie Richards has become a unique voice in the NYC experimental scene, collaborating with improvisational pioneers Henry Threadgill, Butch Morris, John Zorn and Anthony Braxton along with performance artists Mike Kelly, Laurie Anderson and Yoko Ono. Celebrated as an adventurous performer, Stephanies theatrical tendencies often include multi-disciplinary collaborations of sight, sound and movement. An avid collaborator and supporter of new music, Stephanie has premiered new works throughout North America and Europe, while having her own compositions premiered at venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Blue-note and Lincoln Center. Stephanie is a founding member of the Asphalt Orchestra, created the collective Bang On a Can, where she has worked with David Byrne, St. Vincent, Susan Marshall and has also performed alongside Kronos Quartet, The Pixies, Kanye West, A-Trak and Common. Vocal cries, slave songs, spirituals, sung in the fields as CODE songs, incorporating stories of the Bible to inspire freedom and to create an underground system of communication about clandestine meetings and opportunities to get away and achieve liberation, thus fueling a movement and a lasting body of vital African American artwork that lives on to this day "like a hand on the plow taking one further into the promised land."

The music of (((CODES))), presented by Joshua White, takes the inspiration of these slave CODES and celebrates their spirit through the music of gospel, jazz and spoken word, further fused and elaborated upon through the works of Audre Lorde, Langston Hughes, Amiri Baraka, and other major African-American poets, all of this performed by an all-star band.
