Toubab Krewe
Thursday, February 14, 2013
Doors 8pm / Show 9pm
$6.00 UCSD students / $12.00 general

Some music cannot be found on a map or within iTunes categories. Some music is so original it seems snatched from the great, invisible substrata that runs below all human activity, a sound aching to be born without a flag or fixed allegiance free, questing, overflowing with immediate, tangible life.

This is the music of Toubab Krewe, the vibrant Asheville, NC-based instrumental powerhouse that creates a sonic Pangaea that lustily swirls together rock, African traditions, jam sensibilities, international folk strains and more. Join us on Valentine's Day as we host a special celebration featuring Toubab Krewe, with special guests.

San Diego artists Bridget Rountree and Iain Gunn are The Animal Cracker Conspiracy, a contemporary hybrid puppet company that pushes the boundaries of live performance. With support from the Jim Henson Foundation, they recently produced The Collector, a mysterious tale set in an alternate reality about a lowly debt collector who undergoes a radical transformation of spirit. Performed with toy theatre, tabletop puppets, and film, the story slowly unfolds and draws you into an Orwellian, neo-Victorian world. Accompanying The Collector is a live quadraphonic sound mix by composer Margaret Noble.

AfroJazziacs & Science Fiction Jazz
Saturday, February 2, 2013
Doors 8pm / Show 9pm
FREE UCSD students / $10.00 general

Sometimes a name is all you need. AfroJazziacs takes funky cool jazz sitting in a primped suit in a dark speakeasy and throws it on the dancefloor with high energy Afro-Cuban beats. Mixing cumbia, salsa, cha cha, bomba, and a mouthful of other genres that will make your legs bounce and your hips sway, expect to leave satisfied and a little sweaty.

Featuring Science Fiction Jazz, a quartet of experimental jam artists who take to mixing contemporary jazz with indie rock and even an (obvious) sci-fi twist. Not only is their onstage chemistry clear, but it continues to beat off the stage they believe it key to maintaining their jam band roots.
