ASCE Cinema Presents: Shut Up and Play the Hits
Saturday, December 1, 2012
Doors 7:30pm / Show 8pm
FREE UCSD students / $5.00 general

On April 2nd 2011, LCD Soundsystem played its final show at Madison Square Garden. LCD frontman James Murphy had made the conscious decision to disband one of the most celebrated and influential bands of its generation at the peak of its popularity, ensuring that the band would go out on top with the biggest and most ambitious concert of its career. The instantly sold out, near four-hour extravaganza did just that, moving the thousands in attendance to tears of joy and grief, with New York magazine calling the event "a marvel of pure craft" and TIME magazine lamenting "we may never dance again." This documentary captures this once in a life time performance and an intimate portrait of James Murphy as he navigates the lead-up to the show, the day after, and the personal and professional ramifications of his decision. In October 2012, Shut Up and Play the Hits was nominated in the 'Best Live Music Coverage' category of the UK Music Video Awards 2012, as well as being featured in the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.

ASCE Comedy ft. Michael Che w/ Lauren O'Brien

About Michael Che:

Michael Che is a fresh voice on the comedy scene. A native of Lower Manhattan, Che's comedy blends street culture with world issues to hilarious results.
Che is a standup comic from the Lower East Side of Manhattan. As the youngest of seven children, he has been his family's source of comic relief since he was old enough to wear diapers. Growing up with much older siblings, Che became familiar with standup comedy at a very young age while watching Eddie Murphy and Damon Wayans' specials with his siblings. However, it wasn't until he attended LaGuardia Music & Performing Arts High School that he realized performing could be a future career. As a performer, Che sites Patrice O'Neal and George Carlin as his biggest influences. He appreciates performers who can identify humanity in the most controversial actions and convey it to the audience through humor, which is the approach he takes with his comedy.
Che has been featured and headlined at major comedy clubs throughout Manhattan including: Caroline's on Broadway, Comic Strip Live, Standup NY and EastVille Comedy Club. He has also built a name for himself playing the alternative rooms in New York's downtown scene.
In 2011, Che was named one of Comedy Centrals Comics to Watch. He has appeared on Shaqs All-Star Comedy Jam and can be seen on Television this summer on John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show on Comedy Central and as a recurring contestant on IFC's new comedy game show "Bunk."

Rolling Stones Documentary: Charlie is my Darling
Tuesday, November 20, 2012
Doors 7:30pm / Show 8pm

Rolling Stones legendary two day tour in Ireland!

Charlie Is My Darling, directed by Peter Whitehead, was the first documentary film about The Rolling Stones. The movie was shot during the band's two-day tour of Ireland on 3 and 4 September 1965, and was completed in the spring of 1966. It received only spotty release in 1966 before being withdrawn, and has seldom been seen since then.

The film contains a few concert clips with the video and audio portions out of sync, interviews with all of the band me...
mbers and various fans waiting in line, views of the band traveling on a train and getting on/off the plane as well as rehearsing in a studio setting. An interview with Brian Jones revolves around the idea of life after the Stones, to which he responses he would do "something artistically and far more practical things" and then describes a surreal film project where one of the character is love itself; and is also notable for his candid view of marriage "The whole prospect of marriage rather frightens me... its like signing a contract...you are signing a part of you away, but in marriage you are signing your life away."

The Weeknd Listening Party
Wednesday, November 14, 2012
Doors 5pm / Show 5pm

Come to The Loft next Thursday November 14th at 6pm to get a taste of great music and great food from Zanzibar. Just a reminder The Weeknd WILL NOT be here, just his lovely voice.

The Weeknd is a Toronto-based R&B singer named Abel Tesfaye. Abel started uploading songs to YouTube in 2010 and in March of 2011 he dropped his first mixtape, House of Balloons. In August of 2011, he dropped his second mixtape, Thursday. His third mixtape, Echoes of Silence, was released on December 21 2011. On November 13th 2012 he will be releasing his much anticipated release of Trilogy.

Trilogy will consist of 3 discs which will include his previous mix tapes PLUS 3 NEW TRACKS.

The Weeknd takes his ambivalent emotional tenor and stretches it out, building a whole worldview from it. He has been namechecked by a raft of artists, collaborating with Drake on several tracks, including 'Take Care' from his Number One album 'Take Care', and was asked by Lady Gaga to remix 'Marry The Night'. He also created a remix of 'Shake It Out' for Florence And The Machine and also features on 2 Chainz's new album 'Based On A TRU Story'.
