AfroJazziacs & The Adrián Terrazas-González Trio
Thursday, May 9, 2013
Doors 8pm / Show 9pm
FREE UCSD students / $10.00 general

Sometimes a name is all you need. AfroJazziacs takes funky cool jazz sitting in a primped suit in a dark speakeasy and throws it on the dance floor with high energy Afro-Cuban beats, mixing cumbia, salsa, cha cha, bomba, and a mouthful of other genres that will make your legs bounce and your hips sway (expect to leave satisfied and a little sweaty).

This evening is co-billed with Adrin Terrazas-Gonzlez (saxophonist from The Mars Volta).

Born in Chihuahua, Mxico, Adrian Terrazas-Gonzalez grew up surrounded by the traditional music of Central America, from Danzn, Boleros and Rumba, to Son and Mambo, and as a student, pursued Sociology and Music Studies at The University of Texas, El Paso.

In 2004 Terrazas-Gonzlez joined The Mars Volta, recording the studio album, Frances the Mute, and continued to work with the band (as a full-fledged member) on subsequent albums (Live Scabdates 2005, Amputechture 2006, The Bedlam in Goliath 2008), and all of The Mars Volta side projects (movie scores, DVDs, etc.).

An Evening with Elephant Revival
Friday, April 12, 2013
Doors 8pm / Show 9pm
$5.00 UCSD students / $15.00 general

Elephant Revival shares a commitment to responsible stewardship of the planet and its inhabitants, working with organizations such as the Conscious Alliance, Calling All Crows, Trees Water & People, and other nonprofits supporting humanitarian causes. Their very name was chosen out of empathy for a pair of zoo pachyderms who, upon being separated after 16 years, died on the same day.

Elephant Revival is a blend of music and social consciousness. The five souls in Elephant Revival are:

  • Sage Cook (banjo, guitar, mandolin, tenor banjo, bass and fiddle)

  • Bridget Law (fiddle, octave fiddle)

  • Bonnie Paine (washboard, djembe, musical saw, stompbox)

  • Daniel Rodriguez (guitar, banjo, bass)

  • Dango Rose (double-bass, mandolin, banjo)

All share vocals and write songs. Paine delivers additional beats via foot stomps on plywood, her stockinged feet doing near jigs as her hands, encased in antique leather gloves, rub silver nickels against corrugated metal.

ArtPower! Presents: Alexander Balanescu + Ada Milea: The Isl
Thursday, April 11, 2013
Doors 7pm / Show 8pm
$11.00 UCSD students / $18.00 general / $30.00 reserved

In a quest to reconnect with his Eastern European roots, virtuoso violinist Alexander Balanescu, leader of the internationally renowned Balanescu Quartet, turns to Romania as inspiration for The Island. Working with Ada Milea, an extraordinary young Romanian vocalist, actress, and songwriter, he has composed a remarkable song cycle. Sung in English, The Island is inspired by the classic Robinson Crusoe story but with an improbable twist, as retold by pre-war Romanian surrealist poet Gellu Naum. Wildly exuberant and oftentimes amusing, Ada Milea gives a startling stage performance, capitalizing on her unique story-telling abilities alongside Alex Balanescus gift for melody. Together they create a moving and highly existential parable that engages the audience in a surrealist musical-theatre journey.
