Xylouris White is firmly rooted in the past and future. Playing Cretan music of original and traditional composition, the band consists of Georgios Xylouris on Cretan laouto and vocals and Jim White on drum kit. Xylouris is known and loved by Cretans and Greeks at home and abroad and has been playing professionally from age 12. Jim White is an Australian drummer known and loved throughout the world as the drummer of Dirty Three, Venom P Stinger and now Xylouris White. For the last four years these two men have been performing as Xylouris White, the culmination of 25 years of friendship forged through music and place.

This is event is co-presented with the Center for Hellenic Studies at UC San Diego.

ArtPower: Marquis Hill Blacktet

For the past five years, 30-year-old trumpeter Marquis Hill has been invigorating the Chicago jazz scene with his sleek approach to modern jazz, which often incorporates elements of spoken word and hip-hop. Winner of the 2014 Thelonious Monk International Trumpet Competition, Hill has established his well-deserved reputation as a leading figure among todays crop of adventurous young jazz musicians. With his longstanding quintet, Blacktet (consisting of alto saxophonist Christopher McBride, vibraphonist Justin Thomas, drummer Makaya McCraven, and bassist Joshua Ramos), Hill recently released his album The Way We Play, an homage to his formative years in Chicago through stirring makeovers of jazz standards.

Bridging the gap between The Bangles and The Go-Go's, and current acts like The 1975 and MUNA, The Aces are made up of sisters Cristal and Alisa Ramirez, completed by guitarist Katie Henderson and bassist McKenna Petty. "Stuck" is the first taster off their stellar, self-titled EP, a collection that exhibits a confidence and polish that belies their young years.

Founded in 1934, Smetana Trio is todays foremost Czech chamber ensemble. Currently comprised of Jitka echov (piano), Ji Vodika (violin), and Jan Plenek (cello), the trio perpetuates the interpretational ideals created by their illustrious predecessors as well as other superlative 20th-century chamber music soloists. The Smetana Trio was recently awarded the 2017 BBC Music Magazine Award, the worlds only classical music award voted on by the public.

New Breed Brass Band live and breathe the culture of New Orleans, infusing funk, rock, jazz, and hip-hop into a custom-made enhancement of second-line brass-band tradition. With a founding core of five New Orleans natives, the band made their street debut as a nine-man unit in 2013. Since then, they have showcased their originality opening for such diverse bands as the Fray, Red Baraat, Dr. John, the Waterboys, and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. New Breed Brass Band are certain to sweep the audience away with the spirit of NOLA!

R&B vanguard Brent Faiyaz released his highly-anticipated debut full-length project 'Sonder Son' on October 13. The project marks a return to form for Faiyaz, serving as his first solo release since last year's A.M. Paradox EP, and proves to be an amalgamation of Faiyazs introspective yet relatable lyrics and authentically crafted productions. The Maryland native plans on living forever through his music. Crafting a musical identity that slinks between the hero and the villain, the heartbreaker and the lovesick, the bold and the vulnerable, he walks a long and twisted path of multi-faceted complexity.
